DR FRANCIS WONG YOKE HAE

Dr Wong graduated from University of Singapore in 1982 with MBBS degree (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery). He then completed one year of internship with postings to Internal Medicine, Orthopaedic Surgery and Paediatrics.

He then completed his two years of Surgical traineeship and attained FRCS (Edinburgh) and FRCS (Glasgow). Dr Wong was promoted to Registrar in Orthopaedic Surgery from 1987 with rotations to National University Hospital, Alexandra Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Singapore General Hospital.

Dr Wong trained at London and Cambridge in 1990-1991 under the government HMDP programme specializing in Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery and Knee and Adult Reconstruction Surgery.

In 1994, Dr Wong was promoted to Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Singapore General Hospital.

Dr Wong's special interest is in paediatric orthopaedic dealing with congenital limb deformities like clubfeet and hip dislocation and children's fractures and injuries. He also deals with adult trauma and reconstructive procedures and joint replacements.

Dr Liang graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1982 and worked in Tan Tock Seng Hospital (Paeditric Medicine), Alexandra Hospital, Singapore General Hospital (University and then government orthopaedic department) till 1995.

He was attached for a year to University Florida for sub-specialist training in Musculoskeletal Oncology and Adult Reconstruction (1990). He was also attached to University Maryland for training in correction of limb deformities and limb lengthening (1991).

He has special interest in Hand and Reconstructive Surgery, Spine Surgery, Adult Reconstruction in Hip, Knee and Shoulder Surgery, Trauma and Sports Medicines.

Dr Liang has the honor to be the recipient of Young Orthopaedic Surgeon Award and of the prize for Foetal Allograft paper by Japan Orthopaedic and Trauma Foundation

Dr Liang was the orthopaedic surgeon that was involved in a medical relief mission to Sri Lanka following the aftermath of the tsunami in December 2004.

Dr Tan graduated from the Monash University, Melbourne,Australia in 1974 and was then admitted as Fellow to the Royal College of Surgeon (Glasgow) in 1981. He became a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Singapore (Orthopaedic Surgery) in 1987.

For more than 20 years, Dr Tan has been actively involved in the development to better his profession as an orthopaedic and spine surgeon both in the local and overseas. Dr Tan held the post of the Senior Consultant and the Director of Spine Service with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Singapore General Hospital for the last 10 years. He currently serves as the visiting consultant to the department.

Dr Tan has also been active in training spine surgeons both locally and those from overseas and has helped to develop spine services in a number of hospitals overseas through the Spine Fellowship Program in Singapore General Hospital. In recognition of his contributions, he has been appointed as Visiting Professor to Taishan Medical College and Ningxia Medical College in China.

Dr Tan has presented his works in many local, regional and international scientific meeting and has been invited to deliver lectures in many scientific meetings. He has also published many scientific papers.

For the past 10 years, Dr Tan has focused his practice almost exclusively on spinal surgery. Besides the routine standard spinal and scoliosis surgeries, he has also been in the forefront of the spinal advances including microsurgeries of cervical and lumbar spine, endoscopic disectomy, minimally invasive spinal surgery, spinal instrumentations percutaneous vertebroplasty and artificial disc replacement of cervical and lumbar spine.

DR NGIAN KITE SENG

Dr Ngian Kite Seng graduated from the National University of Singapore ( with Distinction in Pathology) in 1982. He obtained his Surgical degrees from the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in Edinburgh and Glasgow in 1987. He became a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore in 1992.

He was awarded the H.M.D.P. Fellowship in Spine Surgery by the Ministry of Health, Singapore in 1990 and trained in Spine Surgery at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, U.S.A.

Subsequent to this, Dr Ngian has been actively involved in Spine Surgery in his clinical practice.

He is Visiting Orthopaedic and Spine Consultant to the Singapore General Hospital, Changi General Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

His publications include articles on Surgery in the Elderly, Cervical Fusion in Rheumatoid Arthritis, Burst fractures of the Lumbar Spine.

Besides General Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery, Dr Ngian is active in CME and the practice of advanced spine techniques such as Minimally invasive procedures, Spinal Instrumentation and Artificial Spinal Disc Replacement.

DR THO KAM SAN

Dr Tho Graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1985 and was then admitted as Fellow to the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 1989. He then did the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGEMS), followed suit by his Orthopaedic Surgery Exit Certification Examination in 1995, Fellow to the Academy of Medicine Singapore in 1996. Dr. Tho is also a qualified instructor in Advanced Trauma Life Support.

He is also the recipient of the Kwok Foundation Scholarship grant. Dr Tho was awarded the Ministry of Health HMDP Scholarship in 1993 to train at the Department of Sports Orthopaedic Surgery, Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.

Dr Tho has been invited as a speaker on many issues related to sports medicines both locally and internationally. He has also done many publications on international and local journals. He is also involved in the management of sports injuries of sports institutions and is team physician to many professional football clubs.

DR Wong Yue Shuen

Dr Wong graduated from the National University of Singapore Faculty of Medicine in 1989. He was admitted as a Fellow to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1994 and completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery in 1999. He was then awarded the Ministry of Health HMDP Scholarship to train at the University of Pittsburgh and the UPMC Centre for Sports Medicine, specialising in treatment in disorders of the Foot and Ankle. Subsequent to his fellowship, Dr Wong went on to complete a Master's of Science in Biomedical Engineering at the Nanyang Technological University, focusing on Orthopaedic Biomechanics, Sports Engineering, and Rehabilitation Engineering. He also won an award for 'Outstanding Project Dissertation' for his work in Ankle Prosthesis design for the treatment for ankle and subtalar joint arthritis.

Dr Wong was previously Senior Consultant and Director of the Sports Medicine Centre, Alexandra Hospital. He also conducted the Foot and Ankle Clinics, and ran the High Risk Diabetic Foot Clinic in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team. Dr Wong is also a visiting consultant at the National University Hospital.

He is Clinical Lecturer to the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS, and a regular lecturer and past committee member for the Specialist Training Committee for Orthopaedic Surgery. He is also an Instructor for the Advanced Trauma Life Support Course and has been a regular lecturer at the School of Health Sciences, Nanyang Polytechnic.

He has published numerous scientific articles in areas such as sports medicine, dance medicine, total ankle arthroplasty, degenerative flat foot, diabetic foot, and clinical biomechanics. He also co-authored a book chapter on the surgical techniques for Total Ankle Replacement. He is a past reviewer for numerous journals including Foot and Ankle International, Singapore Medical Journal and Journal of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

Dr Wong manages the full range of foot and ankle problems including total ankle replacement, and has been working on developing new techniques in the treatment of slipping peroneal tendons and calcaneal fractures. Other frequently managed problems include ankle instability, Achilles tendon injuries and the treatment of osteochondral disorders of the ankle.

Dr Wong's specialty interests are in Foot and Ankle Surgery including sports, degenerative, dance and traumatic foot conditions, and Sports Medicine and Sports Surgery including knee and shoulder surgery.

Dr Chan graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1988. He obtained his M Med (Surgery) from the National University of Singapore and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1994. In 1999, he was admitted as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

Dr Chan was the first orthopaedic surgeon to be awarded the Ministry of Health HMDP Scholarship for Upper Limb Surgery and trained at the Monash Medical Centre and the Melbourne Shoulder and Elbow Centre in 1999. In 2002, he furthered his training in arthroscopic shoulder surgery with a shoulder fellowship at the Samsung Medical Centre in South Korea. Prior to entering private practice, he was the Deputy Head of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Changi General Hospital and Senior Consultant at the Changi Sports Medicine Centre.

DR PATRICK GOH

A recipient of the Public Service Commission's Local Merit Bursary Award in 1979, Dr. Goh graduated with an MBBS degree from the National University of Singapore in1984. He pursued post-graduate studies in Sports Medicine in the United States Sports Academy in Alabama where he graduated as the academy's top student in 1988, receiving the "outstanding student of the year" award.

Dr. Goh spent 3 years with the rehabilitation medicine department of Singapore General Hospital, before joining the Singapore Sports Council's (SSC) Sports Medicine and Research Centre in 1991. His patients have included many of Singapore's top athletes. He was chief medical officer for the Singapore Contingent for two Olympic Games (Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004), and two Commonwealth Games (1998 and 2002), and has accompanied Singapore's athletes to numerous South-East-Asian games. He held the post of Deputy Director (Sports Medicine) at SSC from1998 until he left for private practice in 2005.

In the mid-90's, Dr. Goh introduced diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound scanning and ultrasound-guided injections into the SSC sports medicine clinic's day-to-day management of sports injuries. In 1998, he researched the use of ultrasound-guided Extracorporeal Shock-Wave Therapy (ESWT) for tendon injuries in Singapore, presenting his findings at the 3rd ISMST meeting in Italy in 2000. Over the last 7 years, he has continued to develop this field, and has conducted lectures and training courses on musculoskeletal ultrasound and ultrasound-guided ESWT in both Singapore and overseas.

Currently in private practice at SportsMed Central in Gleneagles Hospital, his patients range from "ordinary" active people to elite-level athletes who experience injuries, aches and pains or other problems associated with sports and exercise. His clinic is equipped with modern diagnostic ultrasound equipment, and state-of-the-art ESWT capability to provide a one-stop diagnostic and ESWT treatment service for conditions such as heel pain, tennis/golfer's elbow and shoulder tendonitis. Also equipped with an exercise-stress testing treadmill system, his clinic offers pre-participation sports screening to ascertain one's safety and suitability for sports and exercise, and to assist in weight management.

In addition to his private medical practice, Dr. Goh currently holds the appointment of visiting sports medicine consultant to Changi General Hospital and SSC's Sports Medicine and Research Centre, He is also Secretary of the Singapore National Olympic Council's Anti-Doping in Sports Commission. He was a past president of the Sports Medicine Association of Singapore for two terms, and the founding editor of its publication "Sports Medicine News" for 6 years. He has authored or co-authored numerous articles in both popular and scientific press, and is the editor of a sports medicine book "Topics in Sports Medicine for GP's".
