Dr Shankar is a Consultant Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgeon practising both at Gleneagles and Mount Elizabeth Medical. He is also a Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at National Heart Centre Singapore and the Head of the Peadiatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at KK Women's & Children Hospital.

Dr Shankar has the honour to be the recipient of Dr Rama Rao Gold Medal Anatomy in 1978, First Prize of Honor in Microbiology in 1980 and Service Quality Bronze in 2001.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR EUGENE SIM

Dr Eugene Sim is a Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular surgeon at Gleneagles and Mount Elizabeth Medical Centers in Singapore. He also the Medical Director and Head of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgical Services at Gleneagles JPMC Cardiac Center, Brunei. He is visiting Consultant National Heart Center Singapore and Adjunct Associate Professor of Surgery, National University of Singapore. Dr Sim was previously Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery in National University Hospital and National University of Singapore.

Dr Sim is a well known cardiothoracic surgeon in Asia. He has performed more than 3000 cases of open heart surgery. He is renowned for his pioneering work in cardiac surgery. In Nov 1995 he was one of the first surgeons in Asia to perform minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass grafting and has performed more than 100 such procedures to date. He was also the first surgeon in Asia to perform off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting using the Octopus stabilizer and has conducted many training courses to train surgeons in the use of this new technique. He was also one of the first surgeons in the region to perform thoracoscopic ligation of a patent ductus arteriosus in Dec 1995, thoracoscopic thymectomy in 1997, multivessel off pump coronary artery bypass grafting in July 1997 and robotic assisted coronary artery bypass surgery in April 2000. Professor Sim was appointed to the Board of Directors of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery in 2001.

He is a director of two biotechnology companies and on the scientific advisiory board of two others. He has also been consulted by and advised various international medical device companies.

Dr Sim is renowned for his work on cell and myoblast transplant for heart failure. His work has been presented at the Scientific sessions of the American Heart Association, The American College of Cardiology, The European Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and the European Congress of Cardiology. On 14 May 2002 he was the one of the first surgeon in Asia to perform pure myoblast transplantation in the failing heart.

He has more than 150 scientific publications and 200 scientific presentation and is regularly invited to speak at regional and international cardiac surgical meetings. He is active in academic and research work.

He is the current Secretary General Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons of Asia. Dr Sim special interest is in coronary artery bypass surgery, (including minimally invasive and off pump cardiac surgery), valvular heart surgery, lung surgery and the treatment of heart failure.
